Businesswoman and Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Agnes Kagure has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Kenya's tourism sector, emphasizing the need for enhanced partnerships between county governments and key stakeholders.
Drawing from her recent visit to the Louvre Museum in Paris, Kagure highlighted how a single world-renowned attraction can drive significant economic activity and attract international visitors.
Lessons from the Louvre
"During my visit to the Louvre, I was impressed by the volume of visitors and the economic vibrancy surrounding the museum," Kagure remarked. She pointed out that Kenya possesses a wealth of natural and cultural heritage sites capable of competing globally if effectively managed and promoted.
Unlocking Kenya's Tourism Potential
Kagure stressed that the main barrier to maximizing Kenya's tourism assets is not a lack of resources but insufficient political will and weak collaboration. She urged leadership that actively facilitates growth rather than stifling it.
- Stronger coordination between counties and tourism stakeholders
- Strategic packaging and marketing of heritage sites
- Creation of more jobs and expansion of hospitality and transport sectors
"Kenya has abundant attractions and heritage sites. With the right leadership and partnership, we can unlock these treasures for the world," she added.
Her comments come as Nairobi prepares for the 2027 General Election, with economic development and service delivery emerging as central campaign themes.
