The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is taking shape as a specialized security formation designed to address the growing safety demands of Kenya's capital. President William Ruto has mandated the unit to operate under a modern, technology-driven, and highly mobile framework.
Legally grounded in the Constitution, this new formation is established under the Inspector General of the National Police Service's authority to create specialized units within the existing police framework.
Command Structure and Headquarters
The unit will be led by a Commandant, who reports directly to the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, supported by a Deputy Commandant. Kamukunji Police Station has been designated as the headquarters, housing the Integrated Command and Communication Centre (IC4) to coordinate real-time security operations.
To enhance collaboration, a Multi-Agency Liaison Office will be set up at the headquarters to facilitate coordination between the police, county authorities, and other security agencies.
Operational Units and Local Deployment
The command hierarchy extends through Sub-Region and Sub-County Commanders, who manage local police stations, Mtaa police posts, and patrol bases. These units perform specialized roles including:
- Diplomatic security
- Public safety
- Traffic management
- Enforcement
- Investigations
- Patrol operations
This structure ensures a streamlined command flow from the Deputy Inspector General down to grassroots levels, enabling swift and effective responses to security challenges across Nairobi's metropolitan area.
