Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has addressed the origin of the "H.E" title that has trailed him at opposition events, revealing it was coined by his supporters rather than self-assumed.
Speaking on Citizen TV's The Explainer, Sifuna recounted that the nickname emerged during a political gathering in Taita Taveta. Young supporters encouraged him to look beyond past political setbacks and embrace greater opportunities ahead.
"During the meeting, these young people told me not to worry about lost positions, some granted by Raila Odinga and others by the public. They suggested a better title that would fit me, and 'H.E' was easy to say," Sifuna explained.
The senator emphasized that the title reflects the growing optimism among opposition supporters nationwide rather than a personal claim. He linked this positive mood to increased public backing for opposition activities as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.
"Everywhere we've gone, the people have been amazing. I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel because there is a general yearning for change. The public wants a different leadership team to deliver that change," he stated.
Sifuna also referenced the advice of ODM leader Raila Odinga, who urged politicians to return to the people during challenging times, as a key measure of political strength.
On the ODM party's cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza administration, Sifuna noted that opposition activities have clarified supporters' positions. He affirmed that a majority of ODM members remain aligned with the opposition, which he finds reassuring given his long tenure as the party's Secretary-General.
He pledged to continue being transparent with supporters about the opposition's decisions, successes, and challenges, stressing the responsibility of leaders to explain their actions.
Currently, Sifuna is part of the opposition's Linda Mwananchi movement, which includes leaders like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The coalition is conducting regional tours to consolidate support ahead of the next election.
