Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has urged voters in the larger Nyanza region to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, emphasizing Sifuna's longstanding loyalty to the late Raila Odinga and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking at a rally at Posta Grounds in Bungoma on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Natembeya called on Nyanza residents not to shift their allegiance to President William Ruto, but to maintain solidarity with the opposition.
Warning Against Vote-Buying
Natembeya cautioned residents about campaign teams distributing money to influence votes. He recounted observing incidents in Kimilili where cash intended for voters was distributed in smaller amounts than promised, with some recipients receiving just a fraction of the allocated Ksh2,000 per person.
"They come with money and sacks, but they don't give the full amount. Instead of giving Ksh2,000 per person, some get only Ksh200," he said, urging voters to accept any money offered but to vote according to their conscience, citing recent by-election examples in Kabuchai and Ol Kalou where voters resisted bribery.
Call for Opposition Unity
Natembeya highlighted the need for unity between Luhya and Luo communities in the opposition, stressing their historical political alliances. He reminded the crowd that his administration has consistently supported both former President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga.
The governor was speaking during the Linda Mwananchi tour, which began in Trans-Nzoia and passed through several towns before reaching Bungoma. The tour focuses on issues such as the cost of living, government accountability, and criticism of certain government projects including the affordable housing initiative and the Social Health Authority.
Natembeya, a key organiser for the Western leg of the tour, encouraged voters to stand firm against government overtures and to support opposition figures like Sifuna who have remained loyal to the late Raila Odinga's legacy.
