The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has summoned Rigathi Gachagua to appear over alleged hate speech made at multiple public events.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has formally summoned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to appear before it regarding alleged inflammatory statements he made at various public gatherings across Kenya.
In a letter dated August 18, 2026, the NCIC indicated that it is investigating remarks attributed to Gachagua under sections 27, 29, and 63C, read together with section 63E of the National Cohesion and Integration Act. The commission has requested his presence at its Nairobi offices at Britam Towers, Upper Hill, on Thursday, August 27, at 2 pm to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
The summons warns that failure to attend could lead to the issuance of arrest warrants, possible criminal charges, or contempt proceedings.
Alleged Incidents Under Investigation
- Comments made in Meru relating to political leadership and the Mount Kenya region.
- Statements at a public rally in Luanda, Vihiga County, on June 12, 2026.
- Remarks at Gusii Stadium, Kisii County, on February 23, 2026.
- Utterances during a tour in Meru between July 25 and July 28, 2026.
The NCIC noted that Gachagua has addressed his use of figurative language, particularly concerning references to "killing a snake and its eggs." The commission's investigation focuses on ensuring that public discourse does not promote ethnic hatred, racism, religious intolerance, or hate speech.
Gachagua is expected to cooperate fully with the commission's probe scheduled for late August.
