The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned the recent violence that erupted during the Linda Mwananchi political rallies in Homa Bay County. The unrest, which involved road blockades, property damage, and injuries, raises concerns over increasing political intolerance in the country.

In a statement released on Sunday, August 16, 2026, NCIC Chairperson Bishop Kepha Nyamweya Omae described the incidents as a troubling violation of Kenya's Constitution and the National Cohesion and Integration Act. The commission emphasized that all Kenyans have the constitutional right to conduct political activities peacefully anywhere in the country, provided the law is respected.

Violence and Unrest at Homa Bay

During the Linda Mwananchi events, several vehicles were vandalized, including one set ablaze, and multiple individuals, including journalists, sustained injuries. Law enforcement authorities responded by arresting suspects linked to the disturbances.

NCIC's Response and Legal Framework

NCIC has initiated proceedings to summon political actors believed to be responsible for inciting or orchestrating the violence. The commission cited Article 37 of the Constitution, which protects the right to peaceful assembly, demonstration, and petitioning, while explicitly excluding violent or armed gatherings.

The commission urged political leaders, supporters, and youth to exercise restraint and reject any form of political violence or hate speech. It warned against allowing political rivalry to devolve into ethnic hostility or lawlessness, advocating for dialogue as the means to resolve disagreements.

Call for Peaceful Political Engagement Ahead of 2027 Elections

With the 2027 General Election campaign season underway, NCIC stressed the importance of safeguarding peaceful democratic participation. The commission also condemned excessive use of force and intimidation tactics, highlighting that such actions undermine constitutional rights and the rule of law.

In alignment with other rights groups, including Amnesty International Kenya, NCIC called for thorough investigations into attacks on journalists and disruptions of political events in Homa Bay. The commission concluded by urging all political stakeholders to prioritize dialogue over violence as Kenya prepares for the upcoming elections.
