The Nation Media Group (NMG) in Uganda has announced the gradual resumption of its services across television, print, radio, and digital platforms after a month-long suspension.
The closure, which began on June 28, 2026, was enforced by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces and son to President Yoweri Museveni. The shutdown followed a security operation targeting NMG's offices in Namuwongo, Kampala, amid concerns over critical news coverage of Uganda’s political and security leadership.
In a statement released on July 28, NMG PLC Chairman Joe Muganda assured audiences and partners that the media house remains committed to delivering balanced and trustworthy journalism. He also thanked the public for their patience and continued support during the interruption.
General Muhoozi justified the crackdown by citing what he termed "bad stories" about Uganda’s top officials, asserting that all future media reports would require approval from his office. He publicly declared opposition to a free press in Uganda, emphasizing control by "cadres of the revolution."
The resumption of NMG's operations marks a significant development for media freedom in Uganda amid ongoing tensions between state authorities and independent news outlets.
