The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has escalated efforts to curb jaywalking in Nairobi by targeting pedestrians who cross busy roads without using designated footbridges.
On July 28, NTSA officers apprehended 38 individuals at the General Motors (GM) footbridge for ignoring the crossing facility and walking across the highway instead. Those arrested face charges related to obstructing traffic flow and will be arraigned in court.
Video footage from a recent operation shows a traffic officer patiently waiting before swiftly arresting a pedestrian who crossed outside the footbridge. The person was then taken away in an unmarked vehicle alongside other officers.
This enforcement campaign is part of NTSA's broader initiative to reduce road accidents caused by jaywalking, especially in high-traffic areas served by footbridges. Officers have been stationed strategically at footbridge locations across Nairobi to monitor and apprehend offenders.
Pedestrians found violating the rules risk fines and other legal penalties as courts continue processing cases from the ongoing crackdown.
