The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a rigorous alcoblow enforcement campaign across Kenya's Coast region as the August school holidays approach.
In collaboration with the Mombasa County Government and the National Police Service, NTSA's Mombasa Regional Office has initiated road safety awareness sessions targeting motorists and passengers at key bus parks.
Focus of the Campaign
- Heightened alcoblow (breathalyser) checks to detect and deter drink-driving
- Enhanced compliance inspections on major highways
- Public sensitization on road safety practices
NTSA urges passengers to actively report unsafe driving behaviours such as speeding, intoxication, fatigue, mobile phone use while driving, dangerous overtaking, and failure to maintain lane discipline.
The breathalyser device, known locally as alcoblow, measures alcohol levels in drivers’ breath using electrochemical fuel cell technology. It operates in active mode—where drivers blow directly into the device—and passive mode, which samples ambient breath when direct blowing isn’t possible.
This campaign is part of broader efforts to reduce road accidents linked to drunk driving, with prior deployments of alcoblow devices on major highways during festive seasons.
NTSA has called on the public to support the crackdown by reporting any unsafe practices that could endanger children and other road users during the busy holiday travel period.
