Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha has formally switched allegiance from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Speaking during an event in Wamunyoro, Nyeri County, where DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua hosted him, Badilisha explained that his decision was driven by the preferences of his constituents. He emphasized his commitment to honouring their will, describing DCP as the party with the most compelling manifesto for Kenya.
Governor Badilisha stated: "I must respect my people who elected me. That is why I have decided to join DCP since it is the party of choice that has the best manifesto for this country."
He further declared his intention to seek re-election under the DCP banner, signaling a strategic move ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event was attended by key political figures including Senator and DCP Secretary General John Methu, Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, numerous Members of Parliament, MCAs, and hundreds of DCP supporters from Nyandarua County.
Regional Political Shifts
Governor Badilisha's move follows a similar decision by Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata, who recently announced plans to run for re-election on the DCP ticket while maintaining connections with the Linda Mwananchi movement and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's camp.
Kang'ata cited concerns over increasing political intolerance within UDA as a key factor in his departure, highlighting the need for a more inclusive political environment.
These developments underscore a growing trend of political realignment in Central Kenya as leaders prepare for the upcoming election cycle.
