Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, along with the entire county assembly, has officially left President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to join the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) led by Rigathi Gachagua.
Gachagua welcomed the defectors, confirming they will defend their seats under the DCP banner in the 2027 General Election and participate in the party’s primary elections. He assured all aspirants a fair and transparent nomination process, emphasizing equal opportunity regardless of when members joined the party.
Political Shift in Mount Kenya Region
The move is seen as a significant blow to UDA, especially in the Mount Kenya region, traditionally considered a UDA stronghold. Gachagua described the defections as part of a broader "liberation" movement aimed at changing Kenya's political landscape.
"The people of Nyandarua County, led by their Governor, have brought a message of goodwill and are answering the call for Kenya's liberation. To them, the future is green," he said.
Since his impeachment as Deputy President in October 2024, Gachagua has positioned DCP as a hub for leaders and voters dissatisfied with the ruling party. He views the increasing number of defections as evidence of UDA’s weakening influence ahead of the 2027 polls.
