Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga has emphasized the importance of zoning in the ongoing coalition negotiations between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking at ODM’s headquarters on July 28, 2026, Oburu highlighted that zoning is essential to prevent the two parties from fielding competing candidates in the same constituencies, which could divide votes and undermine their shared political ambitions, including the presidency.
Zoning to Prevent Internal Competition
Oburu noted that without clear zoning agreements, ODM and UDA risk becoming major obstacles to each other's success. He explained:
“We have to be careful not to fight among ourselves or with UDA because pushing each other too far could cause us to lose sight of the bigger goal, which is the presidency.”
Challenges and Past Successes
While acknowledging that zoning negotiations are complex, Oburu expressed confidence based on prior experiences where similar arrangements were successfully implemented.
“It is not an easy thing, but we have done it before, so we are going to do it again,” he said.
Context of Coalition Negotiations
The remarks come amid intensified talks on the framework of cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election. Zoning remains one of the most sensitive topics on the table.
Just a day before, ODM leaders reiterated their demand for an equal power-sharing deal with UDA, insisting that the party will only support President William Ruto’s re-election bid if it secures the deputy president position in a 50-50 arrangement.
