ODM leaders emphasize that for the party to back President William Ruto's re-election bid, who will run on a UDA ticket, the deputy president slot must be occupied by an ODM member. This marks an escalation in the political contest for Kenya's second-highest office.

  • Deputy President Slot: ODM insists it should produce the running mate for President Ruto in the 2027 race. Kisii Governor and ODM deputy party leader Simba Arati stated, "Since Ruto is on UDA vying for president in 2027, ODM will produce the Deputy President."
  • Cabinet and Parliamentary Positions: ODM demands at least half of the Cabinet Secretary positions (11 out of 22), up from the current five, as well as key parliamentary leadership roles, including the Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate.
  • Diplomatic Posts: The party seeks control of at least 36 of Kenya's top diplomatic appointments, including embassies and high commissions.

While ODM prioritizes securing the position first, several names have been floated as possible candidates:

National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed noted that the party leader may also vie for the slot, but the final decision will be made collectively.

UDA's incumbent Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has indicated he intends to retain his position, setting the stage for a competitive contest within the coalition.

ODM is mobilizing its strongholds, particularly in the Coast region, where leaders are encouraging voter registration to boost their bargaining power. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir highlighted the importance of voter numbers, saying, "Numbers are the region's bargaining chip. We must hold onto our votes."

Party leaders from both sides are expected to convene next week for a retreat aimed at outlining negotiation strategies and forming the team to lead discussions on the coalition agreement.

Simba Arati expressed confidence in ODM's prospects, stating, "What we assure you is that we must form the next government."
