The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has set firm conditions for its continued alliance with President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
ODM deputy party leader and Kisii governor Simba Arati declared that the party insists on a 50-50 power-sharing arrangement in government appointments. This includes securing at least 11 of the 22 Cabinet Secretary positions currently available, doubling its present five posts.
Expanded Government and Parliamentary Demands
Beyond the Cabinet, ODM is pushing for half of Kenya's top diplomatic roles, which cover embassies, high commissions, and consulates. The party is also targeting key parliamentary leadership positions such as the speakers of both the National Assembly and Senate.
Deputy President Slot Non-Negotiable
Most notably, ODM has made the deputy president position a non-negotiable requirement for supporting President Ruto's re-election. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed emphasized this point, stating that the running mate slot must be granted for the partnership to move forward.
"Since Ruto is on UDA vying for president in 2027, ODM will produce the Deputy President," Arati asserted.
Potential Running Mates and Internal Dynamics
Current Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who holds the position, has indicated his intention to seek re-election alongside Ruto, suggesting a likely contest within the coalition.
Within ODM, several names have emerged as potential candidates for the deputy presidency, including Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Mining Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga. Junet Mohamed noted the party's priority is securing the slot first before finalizing the candidate, also leaving open the possibility for party leader Raila Odinga to be considered.
Meanwhile, ODM is mobilizing support in key regions such as the Coast, where leaders have gathered in Lamu County to boost voter registration and strengthen backing for Joho's ambitions.
