Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou in Nyandarua County, attracted attention on July 28 by choosing to travel to Nairobi via public matatu for his swearing-in ceremony.
Photographs shared with TUKO.co.ke captured Waweru in a modest suit boarding a public service vehicle heading to the capital, a move many Kenyans praised as a symbol of humility from the incoming legislator.
On social media, Waweru expressed gratitude, quoting Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” He added, “On our way to Parliament for the swearing-in ceremony. Grateful to God and the people of Ol Kalou for this honour.”
Milestone Victory for Democracy for the Citizens Party
Waweru won the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat during the July 2026 by-election, running on the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket. He defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah by a significant margin.
This victory marks the first time the DCP, associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has secured representation in the National Assembly, signifying a major breakthrough for the opposition party.
Background and Prior Roles
Before his election to parliament, Waweru served as a political adviser and protocol officer to Rigathi Gachagua. He also was the inaugural Member of the County Assembly for Karau Ward, first elected in 2013.
By profession, Waweru is an agricultural economist who campaigned on issues important to Nyandarua farmers, particularly those involved in dairy, potato, and horticultural farming.
