Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala is set to defend his Commonwealth Games 100m title amid stiff competition at the Glasgow event.
The African record holder will compete in Semifinal Two at 9:05 p.m. EAT, aiming to become the first Kenyan to retain the Commonwealth 100m crown. His main rival is Nigeria's Kayinsola Ajayi, a 21-year-old sprint prodigy who recently posted a world-leading 9.84 seconds at the London Diamond League, ahead of Jamaica’s world champion Oblique Seville.
Omanyala’s semifinal opponents also include Wales’ Jeremiah Azu, England’s Elliot Jones, Ghana’s Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana, Trinidad and Tobago’s Omari Lewis, and Australia’s Rohan Browning.
Reflecting on his title defence, Omanyala said, “I have nothing to prove. I've won it all at this level. Now I'm setting bigger goals, and defending my Commonwealth title would be huge for me.”
Omanyala made history at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games by winning the 100m in 10.02 seconds, becoming the first Kenyan in six decades to claim the sprint title. He outpaced defending champion Akani Simbine by 0.11 seconds.
Kenya’s representation extends to Meshack Kitsubuli Babu, who competes in Semifinal One against athletes including Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati and Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme. Both Azamati and Eseme are looking for redemption after missing medals in Birmingham 2022.
With a spot in the final on the line, the Kenyan sprinters face a challenging field as they strive to keep the nation’s medal hopes alive in Glasgow.
