Oparanya Urges Luhya Unity and Backing for Ruto Ahead of 2027 Polls

Co-operatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya has intensified efforts to unite the Luhya community and mobilise support for President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election campaign.

Speaking at a public forum in Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County, hosted by MP Omboko Milemba, Oparanya highlighted the ongoing development projects in Western Kenya under the current administration, describing them as transformative for the region.

Calls for Unity and Voter Registration

Oparanya emphasized the importance of Luhya unity as a strategic move to strengthen the community’s political influence ahead of the next General Election. He urged residents to register as voters in large numbers, stressing that a robust voter base would enhance Western Kenya’s representation and bargaining power.

Simultaneously, he encouraged continued consolidation of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) grassroots support, even as the party works within the broad-based government led by President Ruto.

Political Dynamics in Western Kenya

Western Kenya is increasingly becoming a key battleground ahead of 2027. Recent events, including a July 31, 2026 meeting in Vihiga, saw ODM leaders like MPs Christopher Aseka and Omboko Milemba endorse Oparanya as a potential running mate for Ruto.

Oparanya’s role has grown central in shaping ODM’s strategy within the government and the broader political landscape. He was joined by Kakamega County Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka, and several county assembly members during the Emuhaya engagement.

Strategic Positioning Ahead of 2027

  • Mobilising residents to support government initiatives
  • Encouraging political organisation and unity in Western Kenya
  • Backing President Ruto’s bid for a second term
  • Pushing for increased voter registration to strengthen regional influence

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission projects a larger voter register for 2027, making Oparanya’s call timely as political players lay the groundwork for the upcoming election.

Oparanya’s advocacy reflects a dual approach: supporting the broad-based government while consolidating ODM’s grassroots presence to negotiate a stronger position in the next administration.
