Burkina Faso has witnessed the return of over 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their home communities in the first six months of 2026, the government announced on Friday. This significant movement back was facilitated by enhanced security in areas that have been reclaimed from conflict.
Minister of Family and Solidarity, Passowende Pelagie Kabre, reported that these returns covered 1,034 localities as of June 30. Alongside the returns, the government has made strides in humanitarian and social support during the same period.
Humanitarian Assistance and Social Support
- Over 480,000 vulnerable people received food aid and essential non-food supplies.
- More than 1,400 women and children living on the streets were taken into protective care.
- Approximately 1,900 individuals benefited from comprehensive social support services.
- Over 1,000 women were equipped with production and processing tools to foster economic independence.
- Specialized care was provided to more than 3,000 survivors of gender-based violence.
These efforts reflect Burkina Faso's commitment to not only restoring safety but also addressing the broader social and economic needs of its displaced population.
