The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) may soon operate under tighter regulations following a new law under consideration in Parliament.
The Tertiary Education, Placement and Funding Bill, 2026 seeks to enforce strict deadlines for applications, processing, and communication of university placement results. Notably, the bill mandates KUCCPS to open placement applications within 30 days after national exam results are announced, a significant reduction from the previous three-month window.
Once applications are received, KUCCPS would have another 30 days to process them and relay placement decisions to both students and institutions.
Revised Application and Revision Process
- Students who are not placed initially can revise their choices within 15 days at no extra cost.
- Those who missed the first application window may apply during a second round, subject to a fee.
- KUCCPS will have 15 days to process and communicate decisions on revised or late applications.
Transparency on Course Details
The bill also requires public universities and colleges to submit details on available courses, capacity, and approved fees at least two months before exam results are released. KUCCPS will verify and publish this information to assist students in making informed placement decisions.
This legislative move aligns with the government's plan to provide full funding for university students starting September 2026, aiming to enhance access and efficiency in tertiary education placement.
