Kenyan police have arrested 37 suspected gang members found with weapons following violent incidents at a Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay on Sunday.
A National Police Service (NPS) statement, issued by spokesperson Muchiri Nyagah, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended during an ongoing crackdown targeting criminal groups responsible for unrest across the country.
The seized weapons included machetes, knives, metal rods, ropes, batons, rungus, and torches. Those detained will face legal proceedings as investigations continue.
Manhunt Underway for Key Suspect
Authorities are actively searching for Oliver Jaoko, alias "Olivetti," who has been instructed to surrender to the nearest police station to assist with inquiries. Police emphasized that all individuals involved in orchestrating or facilitating violence will be held accountable.
Police Condemn Violence and Warn Organisers
Nyagah condemned the attacks on law enforcement officers and destruction of property during the rally. One police officer tragically lost his life when a police vehicle lost control amid the chaos, and several others were injured.
The police also reported damage to five police vehicles and multiple civilian cars, as well as assaults on journalists covering the event.
The NPS issued a stern warning to criminal gangs, their sponsors, and anyone exploiting political events to incite violence or intimidate the public. The statement underscored the police’s commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring public safety.
Guidelines for Political Rallies
Moving forward, political organizers are reminded that public gatherings must occur between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with prior notification to police to allow for adequate security arrangements.
Security for the Linda Mwananchi activities was coordinated by the Nyanza Regional Police Commander and was described as proportionate to the expected needs.
Police Call for Responsible Conduct
Nyagah urged all political actors to uphold decorum, respect the law, and avoid actions that threaten peace ahead of the 2027 elections. The police reaffirmed their dedication to protecting citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly while maintaining order.
