Authorities have opened a murder investigation into the death of Kenya Airways pilot Kelvin Theuri Wachira, who suffered fatal head injuries following an incident in Nairobi.
The 33-year-old pilot was last seen socializing with friends on July 19, 2026, at the Nairobi West Prison Mess in Lang'ata. An altercation reportedly occurred during the night.
Hours later, Wachira was discovered unconscious near the entrance of the prison facility along Lang'ata Road. He was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital by a man who identified himself as a Good Samaritan and claimed to be a security officer at Lang'ata Women's Prison.
Medical staff admitted Wachira as an "unknown African male" with severe head trauma and bleeding from the mouth. Despite emergency treatment and attempts to transfer him to Kenyatta National Hospital for intensive care, no ICU bed was available. He was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. on July 20, 2026.
A post-mortem confirmed that blunt force trauma to the head caused his death.
Ongoing Investigations
- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit, led by Martin Nyuguto, is examining hospital records and CCTV footage from Mbagathi Hospital, including the arrival of the Good Samaritan's vehicle (registration KAP 199J).
- Police have documented the Nairobi West Prison Mess and the scene where Wachira was found unconscious.
- His white Mercedes-Benz, parked outside the prison mess the night of the incident, has been seized for forensic analysis at the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the pilot's death and are working to identify those responsible for the fatal injuries.
