Police in Baringo County have initiated a manhunt for a man alleged to have sexually abused and impregnated his teenage daughter in Kitibei Village, Saimo Ward. The case has devastated the family and raised alarm over the increasing teenage pregnancy rates in the region.
The victim, now a young mother of a two-month-old baby, was reportedly isolated by her father, who showered her with gifts and demanded her company during daily chores such as fetching firewood and water. The girl's mother grew suspicious and confronted her husband multiple times but was met with threats.
"At night when he leaves, I ask where he is going, but he threatens my life and becomes aggressive," the mother revealed. Attempts to seek intervention from village elders and the area chief were unsuccessful, as the father's behavior was dismissed as parental affection.
The abuse surfaced only after the girl became pregnant and gave birth, forcing her to drop out of school. She currently resides in a safe house under protection, with her educational future uncertain.
Community Reaction and Legal Challenges
Residents have condemned the incident as a severe violation of a child's safety. Sylvia Mutai, a local resident, stated, "We condemn incest and abuse; home should be a safe place for our girls."
Legal advocates have highlighted systemic issues hindering justice for sexual abuse survivors in rural areas. Lucilla Kandie, a paralegal in Baringo County, noted that many cases are resolved through informal community methods rather than the formal justice system, contributing to the high rates of teenage pregnancies in Baringo North.
Baringo North OCPD Robert Odongo confirmed that police are actively pursuing the suspect, who remains at large.
