Political analyst Herman Manyora has observed a gradual shift in Luo Nyanza’s political allegiance towards the Linda Mwananchi faction headed by Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
In a July 27, 2026 interview, Manyora explained that although Luo Nyanza remains politically divided, support is increasingly favoring Orengo’s camp. He described two main factions in the region:
- One group aligns with ODM leader Oburu Oginga, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, and other leaders allied with President William Ruto.
- The other faction, which Manyora suggests is growing, backs Orengo and the Linda Mwananchi movement, viewing the current political trajectory as unfavorable for the region.
Manyora noted that while Orengo’s faction was initially smaller, the governor’s acceptance across Luo Nyanza has improved, with earlier resistance and hostility now diminishing.
The analyst also highlighted concerns among pro-government leaders about potential electoral challenges. He indicated that President Ruto’s camp might field candidates against established politicians aligned with Oburu Oginga’s faction, such as Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga. Such contests could force these leaders to defend their seats, allowing Orengo’s faction to strengthen its influence.
Echoing this perspective, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna recently dismissed the broad-based government’s sway in Luo Nyanza, asserting that the Linda Mwananchi movement enjoys greater popularity. Speaking on July 21, 2026, Sifuna emphasized that the region has rejected the "Tutam" slogan associated with Ruto’s camp in favor of Linda Mwananchi’s "Wantam" message.
Sifuna pointed to the large turnout at a recent Linda Mwananchi rally in Kisumu as evidence of the movement’s grassroots support and the region’s reluctance to back President Ruto’s second-term bid.
