Political Parties Tribunal Expedites Hearing in Linda Mwananchi Name Dispute Involving Suba South MP Omondi
Suba South MP Michael Caroli Omondi and others challenge Registrar’s rejection of Linda Mwananchi name, citing contradictions and threats to political rights.
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has fast-tracked a case involving Suba South MP Michael Caroli Omondi, former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo, and Pauline Njoki Njoroge against the Registrar of Political Parties. The dispute concerns the rejection of their application to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM).
The applicants initially applied to reserve the name on June 4. The Registrar declined their request citing "public interest" without providing detailed reasons. Following a meeting on August 4, the Registrar acknowledged the initial reasons were vague and permitted the reservation of the name. However, the Registrar reversed this decision three days later, stating that the existence of another party named Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA) was the basis for refusal.
The applicants argue this reversal is inconsistent and lacks clarity, infringing on their constitutional right under Article 38 to participate in political activities. They have asked the Tribunal to bar the Registrar from processing or registering any variations of "Linda Mwananchi" until their appeal is resolved.
They further highlighted that their digital platform under the Linda Mwananchi Movement name had attracted over 55,000 members and more than 13,000 volunteers by August 13, warning that allowing another entity to use a similar name would cause significant prejudice and interfere with their political engagement.
On August 21, PPDT Chairman Innocent Muganda certified the matter as urgent and directed an ex parte initial hearing. The Registrar must respond by August 24, with a possible supplementary affidavit due by August 25. The Tribunal scheduled an inter partes hearing for August 25, 2026, at 2:30 pm.
