President William Ruto has raised a playful query regarding the nationality of some of Uganda's top athletes, suggesting they might originally be Kenyan. He made these remarks while acknowledging Kenya's continued prominence in global athletics and urging Uganda to invest further in sports development.
Speaking on Sunday during the consecration of the fourth Bishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Diocese of Katakwa in Busia County, Ruto highlighted ongoing government efforts to boost sports infrastructure. He noted that 32 stadiums are currently being constructed nationwide to nurture young talent and sustain Kenya's reputation as a sporting nation.
"Our brothers from Uganda are making gradual progress in athletics, but they have not yet reached our level. Sometimes I wonder if those winning Olympic medals for Uganda are actually Kenyans or our brothers from across the border," Ruto remarked, emphasizing the close ties between the two countries.
He added, "We are one people and one community, the East African Community," underscoring regional unity beyond sports.
New Bishop for Katakwa Diocese
During the event, Ruto congratulated the newly elected Bishop, the Ven. Dr. Vitalis Job Ekuru, who succeeds Rt. Reverend John Okude following his retirement earlier this year. Ekuru was chosen by the Provincial Electoral College after a competitive election involving several candidates.
Ruto encouraged the new bishop to lead with wisdom and humility, citing scripture to inspire steadfastness in his ministry.
