Prof. John Okumu has been officially appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, effective immediately. His appointment follows a rigorous selection process conducted by the Public Service Commission, where he emerged as the leading candidate.
The Kenyatta University Council Chairperson, Prof. Clara Momanyi, highlighted Prof. Okumu's extensive background in academic leadership and institutional development. "He brings a wealth of experience in research, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement," she noted.
Prof. Okumu succeeds Prof. Paul Wainaina, who retired in January 2026. His career at Kenyatta University spans several decades, starting as a Tutorial Fellow in 1988 and advancing to Associate Professor by 2004. He also served as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) for ten years.
Academic Background and Contributions
- Earned a Bachelor of Education (Science) degree majoring in Physics from Kenyatta University in 1986.
- Completed an MSc in Condensed Matter Physics at Kenyatta University in 1988.
- Obtained a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Leeds, UK, in 1996.
Prof. Okumu has an impressive publication record, including 26 papers in internationally refereed journals, 18 conference articles, and two authored books. He is also a member of the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation Network, which supports young African scientists through training and scientific information exchange.
