Prof John Okumu has officially been appointed as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, following a rigorous selection process conducted by the Public Service Commission (PSC).
The appointment was announced in a notice signed by Prof Clara S. Momanyi, Chairperson of the University Council, who described Prof Okumu’s selection as well-deserved and urged the university community to support his leadership.
Extensive Experience at Kenyatta University
Prof Okumu returns to the helm of Kenyatta University with a wealth of experience, having served for a decade as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) and held various senior management roles within the institution. His expertise in academic leadership, research, and institutional development is expected to guide the university through its next growth phase.
Competitive Recruitment and Legal Challenge
- Prof Okumu scored 84.5 marks in the PSC interviews, emerging as the top candidate ahead of Prof Stephen Odebero and Prof Godfrey Mse.
- The recruitment process faced a legal challenge from Prof Waceke Wanjohi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs), who claimed she had scored higher and was unfairly excluded.
- In April, the High Court issued temporary orders halting the appointment and directed the renewal of Prof Wanjohi’s contract pending case determination.
- After months of uncertainty, the University Council confirmed Prof Okumu’s appointment on Monday.
Looking Ahead
Prof Okumu had been serving as Acting Vice Chancellor since January 2026, following the completion of Prof Paul Wainaina’s eight-year tenure. The Council highlighted that Prof Okumu’s leadership will focus on innovation, excellence, and enhancing the university’s global impact.
“We celebrate this well-deserved milestone and wish him wisdom, strength, and success as he leads our University towards greater excellence, innovation, and global impact,” the Council stated.
