Kenyatta University has appointed Professor John Okumu as its new Vice Chancellor, following a competitive recruitment process conducted by the Public Service Commission (PSC).
Professor Clara Momanyi, Chairperson of the University Council, confirmed that Okumu was the top candidate in the selection exercise. His appointment is effective immediately.
Academic and Leadership Journey
Prof. Okumu has a long-standing relationship with Kenyatta University, having served as Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs for ten years. He has also held multiple senior management positions within the institution.
His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Education in Science (Physics) and a Master of Science in Condensed Matter Physics from Kenyatta University, completed in 1986 and 1988 respectively. He earned his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Leeds, UK, in 1996.
Joining Kenyatta University as a tutorial fellow in 1988, Okumu steadily advanced to associate professor by 2004. Beyond administration, he has contributed extensively to research with 26 publications in international journals, 18 conference articles, and two authored books. He is also affiliated with the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation Network supporting African scientists.
University Council's Endorsement
Chairperson Momanyi expressed confidence in Okumu’s ability to lead the university forward, highlighting his expertise in academic leadership, research, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement.
Prof. Okumu succeeds Prof. Paul Wainaina, who retired in January, filling the vacancy at the university’s helm.
