Queen Camilla Opens Up on King Charles’ Cancer Battle and Private Struggles
Queen Camilla reveals the emotional challenge of keeping King Charles’ cancer diagnosis secret before the palace announcement in early 2024.
Queen Camilla has shared her personal experience of the difficult period following King Charles’ cancer diagnosis, shedding light on the emotional toll before the news became public.
In a film commemorating the 30th anniversary of Maggie’s, a cancer support charity she has led since 2008, Camilla opened up about the challenge of carrying the secret in early 2024. Just days after Charles was diagnosed, she visited a Maggie’s centre in London on 31 January, before Buckingham Palace announced the diagnosis.
Struggling to Keep the Secret
During the visit, Camilla was surrounded by cancer patients and their families, which made the situation deeply personal. She admitted she nearly revealed the news but restrained herself, understanding the importance of timing.
"I almost said something," the Queen said, adding she was "longing to let it out" but knew the announcement was not yet due.
Official Announcement and Diagnosis Details
The palace publicly confirmed on 5 February 2024 that King Charles had been diagnosed with a form of cancer while undergoing treatment for benign prostate enlargement. Although the specific cancer type has not been disclosed, officials clarified it was not prostate cancer.
King Charles chose to share the news himself, hoping to raise awareness and support others facing similar challenges. He temporarily stepped back from public duties but resumed engagements by April 2024, demonstrating positive progress.
Resilience and Ongoing Treatment
Camilla praised her husband’s determination, noting that the diagnosis did not slow him down. She described his continued commitment to his royal responsibilities as a key way he coped with the illness.
In December 2025, Charles revealed that his treatment had been scaled back due to positive early intervention results. Buckingham Palace confirmed his exceptional response to treatment, though his cancer has not yet been declared in remission.
New Perspective on Cancer Support
Reflecting on her visit to Maggie’s, Camilla said the experience transformed her approach. Instead of routine conversations, she found herself deeply engaged with patients’ stories and the vital role families play in support, gaining a profound appreciation for cancer care services.
