Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cautioned politicians seeking support in Mt Kenya that winning votes in the region for the 2027 General Election will require serious effort and respect.
Speaking on July 29 at his Wamunyoro home, Gachagua underscored that the mountain community will no longer surrender its electoral influence without clear, structured commitments. He singled out prominent leaders, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, Amason Kingi, Aden Duale, and Kipchumba Murkomen, reminding them that their current political positions are largely due to Mt Kenya’s backing.
Demand for Respect and Clear Terms
Gachagua emphasized that any presidential or elective bid must involve genuine dialogue and demonstrated ability to deliver votes from the region. He stated:
- "Our votes are many, and we decide where they go. For anyone aiming for the 50 plus one majority, they must engage us properly."
- "We will no longer accept verbal promises; agreements must be concrete and proven."
The DCP leader also acknowledged past mistakes, admitting that the region’s political support was previously handed over too casually, likening it to "passing a cigarette flame." He pledged to correct this going forward.
Reflection on Ol Kalou By-election and Future Outlook
Gachagua referred to the recent Ol Kalou by-election, where the ruling UDA party suffered a heavy defeat, as a warning rather than a decisive event. He urged Mt Kenya residents not to be intimidated, affirming their constitutional right to vote freely without fear.
"This is our country, and no one will sell fear to the people of the mountain," he declared.
In closing, Gachagua reiterated that the Mt Kenya vote is a powerful force that will be negotiated with seriousness and respect in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
