Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to President William Ruto, promising that the Mt Kenya region will punish him decisively in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a political rally in Embu on July 25, Gachagua capitalised on controversial remarks made by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale to intensify his criticism of the president.
Gachagua’s Response to Duale’s Comments
Gachagua accused President Ruto of deliberately sending Duale to demean the Mt Kenya community. He said the region would not forgive the insult at the ballot box next year.
"William Ruto sent Aden Duale to come abuse us. He called us hyenas, and we accept to be called hyenas. Next year August, we will eat you, chew and swallow you. We won't eat anyone else but those who have called us hyenas. You will go home by noon on the election date," Gachagua declared.
Details of the Controversy
The uproar began after Duale’s remarks during a Lafey Constituency event, where he was perceived to have compared the Central Kenya community to hyenas, implying selfishness and indifference.
The comments sparked backlash from Mt Kenya leaders, including some who support President Ruto.
Duale’s Defence and Call for Consistency
Duale denied targeting any community, insisting his words were distorted. He stated his intention was to promote inclusivity and national unity, emphasising equal opportunities for all Kenyans.
He also criticised those who remained silent when the Somali community was previously targeted, urging public leaders to avoid selective outrage.
"Kenya's strength lies in its diversity. My commitment remains to national unity, peaceful coexistence and equal opportunity for every Kenyan, without exception," Duale said.
Political Context
Since his impeachment as deputy president in October 2024, Rigathi Gachagua has emerged as a prominent opposition figure advocating for Mt Kenya’s interests ahead of the 2027 elections.
