Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has revealed plans to construct a modern garage designed to accommodate up to 1,200 vehicles. This initiative aims to relocate mechanics displaced by the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Programme.
The new facility will offer a range of amenities beyond basic vehicle repair spaces. These will include vehicle showrooms, painting booths, car wash bays, training rooms, clinics, retail shops, kitchens, and other support services. The project is part of wider efforts to restore the Nairobi River, enhance environmental conditions, and unlock economic opportunities along the river corridor.
Support for Mechanics and Traders
Governor Sakaja emphasized that while the regeneration works have temporarily disrupted businesses, the long-term benefits will improve working environments and business prospects for affected mechanics.
In addition to the garage, Sakaja met with Central Business District (CBD) traders to address their concerns, including rising import taxes and security issues. The traders appreciated recent infrastructure upgrades, such as street paving and public space improvements, but requested further enhancements in downtown areas.
Responding to these concerns, Sakaja pledged to rehabilitate key roads including Luthuli Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Kirinyaga Lane, and Kirinyaga Road. He also committed to building a modern health facility to serve market traders and customers, as part of ongoing efforts to modernize markets with better infrastructure, cleaner spaces, and increased security.
The governor assured continuous engagement with mechanics, traders, and other stakeholders throughout project implementation to ensure the initiatives meet Nairobi residents’ and businesses’ needs.
