Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has advised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna against equating the size of a single political rally with lasting influence. Speaking on July 27, 2026, Salasya emphasized that genuine political strength is cultivated over many years through consistent interaction with constituents.
Enduring Political Influence
Salasya pointed to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a prime example, noting that he has maintained dominance in Ukambani and the Upper Eastern region for over two decades. Attempts to challenge Kalonzo's influence in these areas have typically met with strong political resistance.
He further highlighted former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s sustained support within the Kisii community. Similarly, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa holds significant sway in Trans Nzoia County and parts of Bungoma.
Warning Against Superficial Comparisons
The MP cautioned that comparing these leaders’ long-term political capital to the turnout at a single rally hosted by Sifuna risks underestimating their entrenched support bases. Such comparisons, he warned, could sow discord within the opposition and inadvertently benefit the ruling party, potentially boosting President William Ruto’s re-election chances.
Call for Opposition Unity
Salasya urged opposition figures to respect each other’s regional influence and avoid public disputes that could weaken the coalition. He stressed that durable political alliances depend on mutual respect and acknowledgment of each leader’s established political strength rather than attempts to diminish one another.
