The Kenyan Senate has opened a public consultation on a proposed amendment to the Crops Act that would officially recognise achiote, commonly known as Mrangi, as a scheduled crop.
This follows the First Reading of the Crops (Amendment) Bill, 2023, on June 17, 2026, after which the bill was referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries for further scrutiny.
About the Bill
The amendment seeks to include Mrangi (Bixa orellana) in the First Schedule of the Crops Act, Cap. 318, thereby acknowledging its significance in Kenya's agriculture sector.
Achiote is noted for its resilience to drought and pests, having been introduced to Kenya’s coastal region in the 1970s. Its seeds produce bixin, a natural dye widely used in food processing and cosmetics industries.
Public Participation Process
In line with constitutional and parliamentary requirements, the committee is inviting individuals and organisations to submit their views and recommendations on the proposed legislation.
- Written submissions can be delivered physically, by post, or sent via official email addresses provided by the Senate.
- The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 7, 2026, at 5 pm.
- Copies of the Bill and a summary digest are available on the Parliament website to assist the public in reviewing the proposal.
This consultation replaces an earlier invitation, and the public is advised to use this latest notice and deadline for their input.
