Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has revealed that he was approached with a KSh 10 million bribe to vote in favour of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment in October 2024.
Speaking to Citizen TV, Maanzo stated that the bribe offer came from individuals linked to the Kenya Kwanza coalition and close to President William Ruto. He declined the money after being warned that accepting it but voting against the motion could endanger his life.
"I was approached on the condition that I take the money and vote 'yes,' and that if I took it and voted 'no,' I would not get to my house. It was KSh 10 million from government agents," Maanzo said.
He added that those who made the offer were not sitting members of parliament but experienced political operatives affiliated with Kenya Kwanza.
Other MPs Confirm Money Exchanged Hands
Maanzo's claims come after several MPs publicly admitted that bribes circulated during the impeachment process. National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed acknowledged that funds were managed by Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot.
Lang'ata MP Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang'o, also confirmed on a podcast that legislators received varying sums during the proceedings.
Gachagua Calls for Judicial Intervention
Following these revelations, Rigathi Gachagua, now leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party, has urged the courts to take note of the public bribery admissions and deliver justice.
Earlier this year, a High Court dismissed Gachagua's petition challenging the impeachment, ruling that although his right to a fair hearing was violated, the process would not be nullified. The court ordered the Senate to pay him KSh 50 million in constitutional damages, which he rejected.
