Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has encouraged steadfast supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to explore alternative political avenues. Speaking at a rally in Bungoma County, Sifuna suggested that those committed to ODM ideals should not feel obligated to remain within the party.
"Those who truly believed in ODM, give us the permission to look for another party," he stated during his address at Poster Grounds.
The senator's comments come amid ongoing legal proceedings challenging his removal as ODM secretary general. Sifuna is seeking to overturn the Registrar of Political Parties' decision that recognised his ouster, a move he contests in the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.
Supporters Rally Behind Sifuna
During his political tour, Sifuna visited Kiminini in Trans Nzoia County, where residents transformed a roadside rally into an impromptu fundraising event for the Linda Mwananchi Movement. Supporters contributed small denominations ranging from Sh20 coins to Sh50 notes, with videos circulating on social media showing crowds eagerly handing over donations.
Receiving the contributions, Sifuna emphasised the importance of grassroots financing in politics, expressing his preference to be accountable to ordinary citizens rather than wealthy patrons.
"They said one cannot be president in this country without money. I would rather be indebted to the people giving me as little as Sh10 than be indebted to one person who will give me Sh10 million," he remarked.
He further warned against the influence of affluent financiers, arguing that leaders backed by a small group of wealthy donors often face pressure to award lucrative contracts, which can hinder effective governance.
Legal Challenge Continues
On July 9, the Registrar of Political Parties, John Lorionokou, formally recognised Sifuna's removal, stating that the process adhered to the Political Parties Act and ODM's constitution. The Registrar's decision followed a review of party documents and a lack of response from Sifuna.
Despite this, Sifuna has filed an amended complaint with the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, seeking to nullify the Registrar's decision and reclaim his position as ODM secretary general.
