Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna publicly dismissed a call to marry a second wife during the funeral of Gloria Khalwale, the late third wife of former senator Boni Khalwale, held on August 21, 2026.

The suggestion came from Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, who hinted that Sifuna should consider polygamy. However, Sifuna responded firmly from the podium, explaining his opposition based on his wife’s cultural background.

Sifuna Cites Mshitsetse Community Traditions

Addressing the mourners, Sifuna revealed that his wife hails from the Mshitsetse community, whose members identify as Wakulusava. He explained that within this community, taking an additional wife is believed to undermine a man's leadership status.

"Kajwang, you do not know I am married to a Mshitsetse woman. The Wakulusava believe that if you add another wife, leadership is lost. So, this suggestion you brought here is unwelcome," Sifuna stated, urging Kajwang to focus on his own family matters instead.

Context of the Funeral Gathering

The funeral of Gloria Khalwale attracted several politicians and was marked by candid and informal speeches, a common feature in large community funerals in western Kenya. Sifuna’s witty and resolute rejection of the polygamy suggestion quickly gained traction online after the speech was shared widely.

This incident highlights the intersection of cultural beliefs and personal decisions among Kenyan leaders, emphasizing respect for community traditions in public life.
