Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed willingness to cooperate with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, despite having supported his impeachment earlier this year.
Speaking on Citizen TV's The Explainer, Sifuna emphasized that the shared objective of removing President William Ruto from office transcends previous political conflicts. He highlighted that his Linda Mwananchi movement is open to alliances with anyone committed to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law.
Focus on Shared Goals
"We will work with everyone who believes in these things, the Constitution and the rule of law. We will work with anyone who believes that Ruto does not deserve an extra day in office and, for as long as that's our cause, we will work together," Sifuna said.
Impeachment Justified but Not a Barrier
Regarding his vote to impeach Gachagua over alleged interference in Nairobi County affairs, Sifuna maintained his stance but noted that the matter has been settled legally.
"As a lawyer, I’ll tell you there’s a rule against double jeopardy. He paid for his mistakes, he was impeached. What else do you want me to do, beat him?" he questioned.
Shared Responsibility in Opposition
Sifuna acknowledged Gachagua’s unique role in President Ruto’s rise to power, suggesting this gives the former Deputy President a special responsibility in efforts to remove him.
"He feels largely responsible for Ruto being in power and therefore has a greater responsibility in removing him than anyone else," Sifuna added.
Rejecting Bribery Allegations
Addressing recent claims by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed that legislators were bribed to impeach Gachagua, Sifuna dismissed the allegations.
"I did not need any inducement when it came to Gachagua's impeachment because I had publicly taken positions against some of his conduct and pronouncements," he stated.
