A matatu carrying 54 passengers to a traditional dowry ceremony in Makueni crashed on the Kalembwani stretch of the Maumba-Nzakika Ward road on Friday, August 14, 2026. The accident claimed the lives of seven people and left 28 others injured.
The vehicle, which was transporting residents from Ivingoni-Nzambani Ward in Kibwezi East, veered off the road while en route to a kyathi event, a cultural dowry payment ceremony within Makueni Constituency.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
Video footage circulating online shows survivors sitting by the roadside, visibly shaken and some with injuries, as rescue teams from Makueni County health department swiftly responded. Ambulances were dispatched promptly to the scene to assist the injured and transport them to nearby health facilities.
Overloading Raises Concerns
The matatu was significantly overloaded, carrying far beyond the legal passenger capacity allowed for such vehicles in Kenya. Authorities have repeatedly warned that overloading remains a major contributor to fatal road accidents nationwide.
Community in Mourning
The victims and survivors are from the same ward community, travelling together for what was meant to be a celebratory occasion. The tragic loss of seven lives has plunged Ivingoni-Nzambani into mourning, with many injured still undergoing treatment.
