Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed readiness to work with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua despite their previous political differences. Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV, Sifuna emphasized the importance of unity among like-minded individuals aiming to remove President William Ruto from office.
Sifuna acknowledged that he voted to impeach Gachagua over allegations including interference in Nairobi County affairs. However, he stressed that Gachagua has already faced consequences for his actions, and their shared goal of defending the Constitution and promoting the rule of law outweighs past disputes.
"As a lawyer, I know the rule against double jeopardy. He was impeached and has paid for his mistakes," Sifuna said, adding that his vote was based on specific misconduct rather than personal animosity.
The senator further noted Gachagua’s unique position in the political landscape, given his role in helping President Ruto secure the 2022 election. Sifuna believes this places a greater responsibility on Gachagua to lead efforts to remove Ruto from power.
Addressing allegations of inducement related to the impeachment vote, Sifuna denied receiving any form of bribery, pointing out that his stance was public before the proceedings. His comments came following claims by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed about possible financial influence during the impeachment process.
