Sifuna Rejects Calls to Take Over Khalwale’s Party, Vows to Lead Through Linda Mwananchi

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has dismissed suggestions that he needs to take over Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale’s political party to contest the 2027 presidency.

Speaking at the burial of Gloria Seikeyan Khalwale in Kakamega County on August 21, 2026, Sifuna challenged critics who underestimate young politicians’ capabilities and political structures.

Sifuna Responds to Malala’s Proposal

Deputy Party Leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Cleophas Malala, had urged Khalwale to relinquish his party to Sifuna to facilitate his presidential ambitions. Sifuna, however, rejected this notion outright, questioning why anyone would assume he lacks a political vehicle.

“Yani kwa akili yako unakaa tuu na unafikiria Sifuna hana chama?” he asked, drawing cheers from the crowd.

He attributed much of his political grounding to veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, referring to him as Kenya’s foremost political strategist.

Linda Mwananchi Movement as a Political Brand

While not officially confirming his 2027 presidential bid, Sifuna highlighted the growing influence of the Linda Mwananchi movement, describing it as a recognizable political brand transcending party names.

“A rose by any other name will still smell as nice,” he said, emphasizing that citizens seek credible leadership regardless of the banner.

Direct Message to Malala

Sifuna also addressed Malala directly, questioning why he was fixated on the Linda Mwananchi movement despite holding a leadership position in another party.

“Na Mheshimiwa Malala wewe tulia tu, na sijui kwa nini una focus na Linda Mwananchi wewe ni Deputy Party leader wa DCP,” Sifuna remarked, earning applause from attendees.

Political Dynamics in Western Kenya

The debate underscores the shifting political landscape in Western Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections, with leaders like Khalwale endorsing a Sifuna-Kalonzo Musyoka presidential ticket, while Malala advocates for Sifuna’s central role in opposition coalitions.

Sifuna’s statement signals a move away from discussions about acquiring political parties toward strengthening the Linda Mwananchi movement as a platform for credible leadership.
