Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has declared his intention to recover every political position he lost after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, expressing optimism about the opposition's revival ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on July 25, 2026, during the opposition’s Linda Mwananchi tour in Trans Nzoia County, Sifuna recalled that he held key roles including ODM Secretary-General and Senate Deputy Minority Whip before losing them following Raila’s demise.
“When Baba left me as Secretary-General, I was also the Senate Deputy Minority Whip,” Sifuna said at Sibanga. “After Baba passed on, locusts invaded. They took everything from me, including my positions.”
The ODM party formally removed Sifuna as Secretary-General in June 2026 after a disciplinary process upheld recommendations from its internal dispute resolution committee. ODM interim Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo confirmed the decision was in line with the party constitution and unanimously adopted by the National Executive Committee.
Without specifying names, Sifuna expressed confidence that within a year, he would reclaim all lost roles. “Within the next 12 months, everything that was eaten by the locusts will be restored,” he asserted.
Opposition Momentum Rebuilding
Sifuna acknowledged that the opposition lost ground following Raila’s death but highlighted recent political tours as evidence of renewed support. “We have travelled across Kenya, including the Coast, Narok, and Maasai regions. There are no votes for Kasongo there,” he said, referring to President William Ruto by his political nickname.
He also confirmed that opposition leaders are working towards presenting a unified presidential candidate to challenge President Ruto in 2027, with ongoing consultations among regional leaders.
Appreciating public support, Sifuna noted that grassroots donations have been instrumental in funding opposition campaigns. “They said we don’t have money, but the paybill is bringing in money every day. I thank Kenyans for the many Ksh10 contributions. We don’t need Kasongo’s money; we will walk with the power of the citizens,” he said.
The Linda Mwananchi rallies continue to serve as a platform for mobilising opposition supporters nationwide as political parties gear up for the upcoming elections.
