Silas Jakakimba, a lawyer and political strategist who spent nearly two decades working closely with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has shifted allegiance to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Currently serving as UDA Secretary for Homa Bay County, Jakakimba is now gearing up to contest the Suba North parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
From Humble Beginnings to Political Strategist
Born on an island in Mfangano, Homa Bay, Jakakimba was raised by his grandmother after losing his mother early in life. Economic hardships forced him to drop out of school and work as a fisherman until benefactors supported his education. He later joined the University of Nairobi's Parklands Law Campus, where his involvement in student leadership and the Liberal Democratic Party Youth League brought him into contact with Raila Odinga.
Years of Service with Raila Odinga
Jakakimba described his nearly 19 years alongside Odinga as a period of intense commitment and close observation of the veteran leader’s generosity. He recalled how Odinga regularly distributed financial support to ordinary citizens, emptying a briefcase of funds every day. Although Jakakimba initially planned to leave his role in December 2017, Odinga persuaded him to stay during a politically sensitive period. He finally departed after the 2022 elections.
Political Realignment and Future Plans
Jakakimba's switch to UDA and support for President William Ruto stemmed from his belief in Kenya’s evolving political direction rather than personal disagreements with Odinga. He informed Odinga of his decision before publicly endorsing UDA in 2023, emphasizing there was no animosity between them.
Looking ahead, Jakakimba intends to focus his campaign on economic empowerment, job creation for youth, and enhancing access to development programs in Suba North. He introduced the "diet agenda," a call for a fundamental shift in the constituency’s development priorities.
This political transition marks a new chapter for Jakakimba, who is now seeking an electoral mandate independent of his long-standing association with Raila Odinga.
