Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has cautioned that internal divisions within the opposition could increase President William Ruto’s chances of securing a second term in the 2027 General Election. Sonko emphasized the need for opposition leaders to unite behind a single presidential candidate to effectively challenge the incumbent.
Speaking on a local television station on July 28, 2026, Sonko highlighted the challenge the opposition faces with multiple politicians aspiring to the presidency. He warned that a fragmented opposition would split votes, benefiting President Ruto.
Sonko stated:
- “The opposition must decide whether to unite behind one candidate. If they do, their position will be stronger.”
- “If more than two candidates emerge, President Ruto’s re-election becomes more likely.”
He also noted that competing ambitions among key figures such as Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Wycliffe Sifuna could hinder coalition efforts. Sonko warned that disputes over leadership roles within the opposition might allow President Ruto’s allies to interfere and weaken opposition unity.
Meanwhile, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna reaffirmed the opposition’s commitment to presenting a single candidate in the upcoming election. Speaking during the Linda Mwananchi tour in Trans Nzoia County, Sifuna emphasized ongoing efforts to build a broad coalition across regions.
Sifuna remarked:
- “The opposition will field one candidate to face President Ruto.”
- “We are engaging communities from Gusii, Western, Kamba, and Mt Kenya to unite in this journey.”
- “Our movement is funded by ordinary citizens, not wealthy financiers.”
The rallies, held in several trading centers across Trans Nzoia County, drew large crowds and featured support from leaders including Governor George Natembeya, MP Babu Owino, and Senator Boni Khalwale.
As the 2027 election approaches, the opposition’s ability to overcome internal divisions and present a united front remains a critical factor in challenging President Ruto’s re-election bid.
