Gaopalelwe, a South African woman, experienced a distressing series of events after thieves broke into her vehicle at a local shopping centre, stealing her handbag and important belongings.
On July 29, 2025, she had briefly stopped at the centre following a family member's request for bread. Departing from her usual habit, she left her bag inside the car instead of securing it in the boot due to being in a hurry.
Upon returning to her car around 18:40, she discovered the driver’s side window shattered and her belongings missing, including her work laptop, purse, driver's licence, bank cards, and identity documents. A trolley assistant at the centre alerted security and helped her document the incident. She promptly blocked her bank cards via her mobile app to prevent fraudulent transactions.
The police arrived approximately two hours later, which Gaopalelwe found frustrating but understood given their workload.
Bribe Request at Licensing Department
The next morning, Gaopalelwe went to the Roodepoort licensing department to apply for a temporary driver's licence. Upon arrival, a staff member at the entrance allegedly demanded a bribe before allowing her to access services. This added insult to injury following the theft she had suffered.
Reflecting on her experience, she noted that victims often face challenges beyond the initial crime, including corruption and bureaucratic hurdles. Despite these hardships, she expressed compassion for herself and others in similar situations.
