Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has appealed to political leaders to prioritize resolving the ongoing Finland scholarship controversy, setting aside political differences. His call follows a Nakuru court’s recent acquittal of Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago and two others linked to the case.
In a statement issued on July 26, 2026, Sudi emphasized that the focus should shift from assigning blame to addressing the challenges faced by students and their families impacted by the scholarship programme.
"Putting politics aside, there must be a lasting solution to the Finland scholarship issue. The students and families affected deserve clarity, fairness, and a resolution that protects their future," Sudi said.
Background of the Court Ruling
The acquittal came after Senior Principal Magistrate Alloyce Ndege found the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against Senator Mandago and his co-accused. The charges related to alleged mismanagement of the Ksh1.1 billion Uasin Gishu overseas education programme.
The magistrate ruled that insufficient evidence linked the accused to criminal wrongdoing and noted that refund claims are a matter for civil courts rather than criminal prosecution.
- Administrative errors alone do not amount to criminal offences without concrete proof.
- Key witnesses either did not appear or were beneficiaries of the scheme, limiting the prosecution's case.
- The charges of conspiracy, stealing, abuse of office, and forgery were dismissed.
"I hereby dismiss all charges against the accused persons and acquit them," Magistrate Ndege declared.
Ongoing Concerns
The scholarship programme, initiated during Mandago’s tenure as Uasin Gishu governor, aimed to support students studying abroad in Finland and Canada. However, it became controversial after numerous parents claimed they paid substantial fees but faced issues such as unpaid tuition and accommodation problems for their children.
Despite the criminal case dismissal, many affected families continue to seek refunds and accountability for their financial losses.
