Taita Woman Transforms Shipping Containers into Thriving Beauty Supermarket
Clara from Mwatate built a successful beauty supermarket using repurposed shipping containers, overcoming financial and construction challenges.
Clara, a salon owner based in Mwatate, Taita Taveta, has successfully established a beauty supermarket by creatively repurposing Maersk shipping containers. Her journey, shared on TikTok, highlights the financial and logistical hurdles she faced during the project.
From Salon to Supermarket
Starting with a concrete foundation opposite Maribel Hotel along the Voi stage, Clara’s plan involved placing pillars at every corner to support the containers. The foundation phase was particularly stressful, but once completed, the shipping containers arrived after a prolonged wait.
Positioning the containers took an entire day, marking the beginning of an intensive construction phase. Clara deliberately raised the roof to mitigate heat inside the metal structure, a decision that significantly increased costs beyond her initial budget.
Financial Strains and Perseverance
With construction expenses exceeding expectations, Clara tapped into earnings from her Royal Touch Hair salon to purchase stock and sustain the new business. Despite exhausting her construction funds, she worked longer hours to keep the supermarket operational.
At the time she installed the shop’s signage, Clara had not yet afforded a 3D sign but promised it would come soon.
Lessons Learned
Reflecting on her experience, Clara emphasized the importance of patience, contentment, and resilience. She acknowledged that not everyone will support one’s progress but urged perseverance regardless of critics.
"Once God moves you from one point, know you are heading to the next," she wrote, thanking her followers for their encouragement throughout her journey.
