Afghanistan's Taliban-led administration has released two United Nations staff members who were detained in Herat province on August 9. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed the release on Thursday, stating the individuals are in good health and that the charges against them have been dropped.

The two men, national staff of UNAMA, were held without explanation by Afghan intelligence officials. UN representatives have urged respect for the privileges and immunities of UN personnel, emphasizing the importance of their safety and freedom of movement across the country.

UN agencies operate extensively in Afghanistan, providing critical services in health and humanitarian aid amid severe challenges, including funding cuts and the return of millions of Afghans from neighboring Iran and Pakistan.

Since the Taliban took control five years ago, their strict interpretation of Islamic law has imposed numerous restrictions, including barring women from UN premises. In June, around 20 aid workers linked to UN partner organizations were briefly detained in Herat over beard length violations but were later released.
