Ekaterina Alexandrova, the world No. 19 and top seed at the Memphis Tennis Classic, was forced to retire from her opening match after collapsing on court amid intense heat.
The Russian player was competing against 16-year-old compatriot Kristina Liutova when temperatures soared to 34°C, contributing to a physically demanding three-hour contest.
Alexandrova lost the first set in a tiebreak but bounced back to claim the second set, pushing the match into a deciding third set. With Liutova leading 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 5-4, Alexandrova showed signs of distress. She received a time violation for delay between points and then suddenly collapsed mid-rally, requiring immediate medical attention.
Medical staff tended to her on court before she managed to stand but was unable to continue, resulting in her retirement from the match. This granted Liutova her first-round victory in her WTA Tour debut. The young player was visibly emotional following the incident.
