The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced 34,016 promotion vacancies for teachers in public primary, secondary schools, Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), Special Needs Education (SNE) institutions, and Curriculum Support Services.

The vacancies cover 30 job categories and represent one of the largest career progression opportunities in recent years. Interested and qualified teachers have until August 10 to apply through the TSC online portal.

Promotion Objectives and Categories

TSC Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei emphasized that the exercise aims to combat career stagnation, enhance school leadership, and support the rollout of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum by promoting experienced educators to senior roles.

Primary schools lead with 204 Senior Headteacher and 4,980 Deputy Headteacher openings. The commission has also advertised 7,895 Senior Master positions spanning four grades.

Classroom teachers stand to gain significantly, with 20 Secondary Teacher I, 4,210 Senior Teacher I, and 13,490 Senior Teacher II vacancies, the latter constituting nearly 40% of all promotions.

Secondary schools have 61 Chief Principal roles, 155 Senior Principal, 783 Principal, 891 Deputy Principal II, and 1,073 Deputy Principal III vacancies to fill across regular schools, TTCs, and SNE institutions.

For TTCs, lecturer promotions include 15 Senior Lecturer I, 34 Senior Lecturer II, 44 Senior Lecturer III, and 51 Senior Lecturer IV posts. Curriculum Support Services have 110 vacancies, including positions dedicated to Special Needs Education.

Addressing Previous Challenges

The promotion exercise responds to long-standing complaints regarding delayed career advancement due to limited funding. TSC maintains that promotions are contingent on available resources and vacancies but highlights reforms to reward experience, leadership, and performance.

Additional Recruitment for Junior Secondary Teachers

Separately, TSC plans to recruit 20,000 Junior Secondary School intern teachers on permanent and pensionable terms. Applications open on August 18 and close on August 31.

  • Applicants must be unemployed with no disciplinary records
  • Must hold a diploma in education with at least a C+ in KCSE and two teaching subjects or equivalent
  • Successful candidates will be retained in their current sub-counties or stations

This initiative supports the full implementation of the CBE curriculum by filling junior secondary teaching positions.
